Welcome to the Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary

The Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary (BWBS) is a private nature reserve, located in Coldstream, near Vernon, British Columbia, in the Okanagan Valley. The sanctuary is operated by the Bishop Wild Bird Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the enhancement and management of the sanctuary for the benefit of wildlife, particularly birds. Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary is open to the public by appointment and provides tours to children and other groups by request.

The sanctuary is an ideal place for bird watching, photography, sketching and writing, and quiet contemplation. We host not only a number of bird species, but a Native Plant Garden, which is a great demonstration of low-water gardening in our climate. If you'd like to come by, please go to our Visit page and let us know your ideal date and time.

Experience the beauty of nature in the Okanagan

The Bishop Wild Bird Sanctuary is a protected waterfront property where birds and other wildlife can live, breed, and feed without feeling the pressures of human development, pollution and hunting. We keep the area as natural as possible, enhancing the habitat with a variety of species that thrive in the North Okanagan, and encouraging the growth of native plants, birds, and animals. The sanctuary includes Riparian, Forest and Grassland habitat, as well as 440 feet of shoreline on Kalamalka Lake, which is left quite wild for bird and wildlife habitat.

Found an Injured Bird?

We are not a recognized B.C. wildlife rehabilitation centre and cannot accept Injured birds or wildlife.

Often the best chance for injured wildlife is to let nature take its course, and to avoid human intervention as this may inadvertently cause more harm to the animal. Please visit our Injured and Abandoned Birds page to learn more on what you can do, and who you can contact if you are faced with an animal in distress.
